Knitting needles

SUPPLIES-KNITTING SUPPLIES

Knitting needles come in many varieties – which you choose depends on the fibre you are knitting with, project, and personal preference.

Circular needles

Although straight needles are useful, if you’re on a budget you’ll find circular needles a better investment due to their versatility. Not only can you knit back and forth as well as in the round, but if you buy a longer needle you can knit even tiny items with the ‘magic loop’ method. They are also easier on the back and shoulders when knitting for long periods of time, as they distribute the weight of your knitting more evenly.

Susan Bates circulars – Economical and lightweight needles that come in a range of colours, in a choice of anodised aluminium or smooth acrylic.

Clover Takumi circulars – Made in Japan from smooth polished bamboo, these needles are my workhorses. Suitable for nearly all fibre types, warm to the touch, and with just the right amount of ‘grab’. I own more than I care to count and I wouldn’t do without them!

Denise Interchangeable circular needles
– a neat concept; instead of having many needles in different sizes and lengths, this kit contains different sized tips and cords which you attach together to get the needle size and length you need. They claim to be airline safe, so if you often fly and want to take your knitting with you, this is the kit for you.

Harmony circular stainless steel circulars – Perfect for ‘sticky’ yarns, for those who find wood needles too grabby for their taste, or those who miss the ‘click’ of their granny’s knitting needles :D

Addi circular needles – super slick with flexible cords and smooth joins, these are real speed-racer needles for the more experienced knitter. The range includes Addi Turbos, stainless steel with a moderately blunt tip; Addi Lace, which have sharper tips making them perfect for intricate work, and the newly released ‘Addi Clicks’, a similar concept to the Denise interchangeable needles. I would love some of these ;)

Lantern Moon circular needles – There are ordinary knitting needles, and then there are these… Expensive, yes, but handcrafted from beautiful natural materials (rosewood or ebony, with ‘virtually seamless’ brass connectors), worth every penny. Even knitting the scratchiest of scratchy acrylic would be a luxurious experience.
