Cardboard craft – Tetris organiser

It’s been a while since we looked at how to make cardboard furniture – today I’d like to revisit the topic and show you how to make this customisable Tetris-themed organiser. This time, rather than corrugated cardboard, I worked with thin cardstock. Cardboard would have been better, but I didn’t have enough on hand to scale the design up.

You’ll need:

  • Several sheets of cardboard or cardstock, depending on the size you want to make.
  • pencil and ruler
  • scissors and/or craft knife and mat
  • Glue (wood glue if using cardboard)
  • acrylic paint and brush

Use the pattern to mark up and cut as many tetrominoes as you want, scaling up as desired. I made my pieces from 5cm squares – I hope to make a bigger version of cardboard made from 20 or 30cm squares, if I can lay my hands on enough cardboard!

Two of the patterns are reversible to get the other two blocks. Cut lines are marked with a solid line.

Next, score the fold lines – mountain folds are marked with a dashed line, there are a few valley folds, which are marked on the pattern with a dotted line and a little curved mark.

Fold and glue your tetrominoes, applying glue over the whole of each tab as this adds strength. When the glue is dry, paint the inside of each piece with acrylic paint.

When dry, arrange your blocks how you want them, and glue together, coating the whole of each surface with glue. This reinforces the pieces. If you used bigger than around a 10cm square (or bigger than 25cm for cardboard), you may wish to glue an extra layer of card between each surface for added strength.

You may also wish to glue a sheet of cardboard to the back of the unit, and paint the exposed sides of the tetrominoes.

Finished! Now, if only I could find a cheap glue that doesn’t make my cardboard curl…
