Needle-felted Valentine heart

Another sweet valentines gift idea today – a needle felted heart. It’s in two halves, keep one and give one away. When they are together, they share a happy hug.

You’ll need:

  • Felting wool fibre in red, a small amount of pink, and a very little bit of dark brown or black
  • foam mat
  • felting needle
  • paper
  • scissors

Make a thick sandwich of 5-7 layers of fibre, alternating directions. Cut out a heart-shaped template from paper and, laying it on the fibre, outline the heart with your needle. Fold in all the fibre that sticks out beyond the outline, and felt into place.

Felt the heart thoroughly on both sides and from the edges (mind your fingers when felting into the sides – OWWW I think that hit the bone!). Keep going until it is quite firm and solid.

Ue tiny bits of dark coloured fibre to make the eyes and mouths – roll them a little between your hands first into an elongated ball, then felt them carefully into place, using the tip of the needle to shape and nudge stray fibres into place.

Cut the heart up the centre with scissors, and lightly felt the edges to tidy up any loose fibres.

Felt the arms from 2 little sausages of pink fibre, and felt into place so that when the 2 halves are together, they look as if they’re hugging.

You could give these as they are, or attach to a keyring or a cord.
