For this week’s Saturday Quickie, I’d like to share a tip about how to make kids play furniture from nothing more than milk cartons, newspaper, and parcel tape. You can make comfy child-size armchairs, tables, couches, beds – all lightweight yet sturdy and strong enough to take even an adult’s weight.
You need:
- Milk or juice cartons – the tall 1-litre type are best
- newspaper
- parcel tape
- scissors or craft knife
Wash out the cartons well. Trim the top of the carton leaving a flap that can be folded and taped down, so the top will be flat. Stuff the cartons well with newspaper (the kids will have fun helping with this!)
Fold the top flap down and tape together. Now you can put the stuffed cartons together to make any kind of play furniture, wrapping well with tape to hold them securely together. You can make a chair by stacking 2 rows of 3 cartons on top of each other, then taping on a back made of 3 more cartons. Why not get your kids involved with designing and building more milk-carton play furniture?

Milk Carton furniture. That would be really fun to do now that I think about it. And it would be a perfect accessory to a knitted or crocheted doll house.
That is a great idea : ) Nice and easy! Thanks for sharing it today at SITS!

This reminds me of those community festivals where they have competitions for floatable vehicles (boats and rafts, for lack of better terms) made entirely of milk and juice cartons that I used to hear about on TV back in the ’70s and ’80s… it’s amazing what you can make out of these!
