How to make a needle-felted lily (part 2)

On Wednesday, I demonstrated how to make a needle felted flower petal. Today, lets put them together to make a lily.

You should have six petals – it doesn’t matter if they are different sizes, in fact slight differences make the finished flower look more natural. You’ll also need a little bit of fibre to make the stamens, your foam mat and felting needle.

Begin by felting 2 petals together – they should touch at the base point, and the angle between them shouldn’t be more than about 30 degrees or your flower will be too flat. The aim is to form the lower halves into a deep cup, as you would see in nature.

When these 2 petals are firmly joined, add a third – put the new petal on top of the last one so all the overlaps are in the same direction. Join each petal in the same way, then join the last to the first.

Now to make the stamens. Take a small amount of fibre and roll it firmly between your hands. This works better if your hands are a little damp, and best of all if your hands are wet and soapy (if you do wet the fibre, let it dry out before you felt it into place – wet fibre eats needle tips for breakfast). Make 2 like this, then fold them in half and push the folded ends into the base of your flower. Work them into place with the needle, sit back, and admire your handiwork :D
